Members
in St
Joseph’s:
We
hold regular Conference
Meetings (A conference
is a small group of committed
members meeting regularly to help the needy in a particular locality),
we work
with those in need in our Parish, we co-operate with local support
services.
Visiting
those in need and sitting side by side with them
remains the core work of the Society. In Colwyn Bay there are for
example many
lonely old people who would appreciate a friendly face and enjoy a chat
over a
cup of tea, knowing that someone cares. But the local conference group
of
members are committed to supporting all who need help, maintaining
confidentiality. In some cases support may extend to doing shopping,
decorating,
gardening, filling in official forms and ensuring they are receiving
their
statutory benefits.
Regular
visiting and personal care, with relationships based on trust and
friendship
are what gives the SVP its unique character.
SVP
& Aid to the
developing world (the SVP Twinnage Scheme)
A
principle objective of the Society is our commitment to person to
person
support. Therefore all aid directed to the developing world is
delivered
directly by members of the SVP in the relevant country. In this way we
can be
assured that donations can be most effectively used, guided and
delivered by
those directly active in the areas of need.
As
part of an international organisation, the SVP for England &
Wales is
particularly aligned under the SVP Twinnage Scheme to supporting needs
in
India, Romania, Sudan, Grenada and Guyana.
We
in Colwyn Bay with others are twinned to Sudan, Romania and India.
For
over 40 years the Twinnage Scheme has enabled the Society of St Vincent
de Paul
in developing countries to thrive and grow, strengthened by the
spiritual,
financial and moral support the members have received. What is a very
small sum
of money for a Conference of SVP members in England & Wales can
enable a
conference of SVP members in a poor country to make a vast difference,
where in
that poor country a poor person may earn about 20 pence per day (if
they are
fortunate); just enough for one day’s food.

Also in North Wales, you may have heard :
Even
in England and Wales, for some, because
of poverty or other unfortunate circumstance – a holiday in
Snowdonia is
unreachable. Every year the SVP brings more than 1,150 people and
children to
the Ozanam Centre for the holiday of a lifetime.
The
Ozanam Centre has
full disabled access (each floor has a disabled toilet with bath
& shower,
and a lift provides wheelchair access to the first floor and balcony). http://www.ozanamcentre.org/02aboutcharity.htm
By
choosing to stay on a commercial basis at
the Ozanam Centre, you will help SVP fund the bringing of mor and more
disadvantaged people to beautiful Snowdonia.
