Childrens' Liturgy

 Issac Wetton - Age 8

The group is formed by parents and children who attend the 9.30am Sunday mass.  There are two separate sub-groups ages:

At the start of mass after the greeting, we go to a separate room in the presbytery for the children’s liturgy session.  The aim of this session is for the children to experience the liturgy in a way that is meaningful to them e.g. reflect on their week, have a better understanding of the gospel.

We aim to make mass as friendly and family orientated as possible. The children rejoin the congregation during the offertory. They usually share with the congregation something about what they have been doing – a prayer, a story or maybe a song.

There is red box at the back of church from where children can help themselves to books. These cover all ages.

As a group we have a special part to play especially during Easter and Christmas. During these celebrations, the children “act” out the gospel at the family service. This is not a drama production but an informal celebration of the Good News with parts for everyone who would like them. There are always some unplanned moments that add to the occasion! We also have a party to celebrate the birthday of Jesus before Christmas.

Every week, those of us who can meet together with others in the Parish Centre after 9.30 mass for coffee/squash and cake. The children play together, usually with the older siblings looking after the younger ones, allowing parents a chance to catch up and chat.

You are very welcome to join us.

The organisers are: Juanita Convill and Claire Fuller

Additional information:

The group is run by a few of the parents who take a turn to run the childrens’ liturgy session.  At present there is a rota for parents to run the session once every six weeks.  Any parent is welcome to join the rota.  All information and material is provided, and preparation time only requires approximately ½ hour (e.g for photocopying). If you haven’t time to do photocopying this can be left for Parish Secretary in the office who will leave it for you in the room for Sunday.

Please note that if you are running late you can come straight into the session rather than going through the church – come down the outside of church beside the school playground and ring the bell of the Presbytery. One of us will let you in. You can then rejoin mass when everyone goes back in.
